Computer's TIPS

  • Make sure your power switch on the back is on. The | and 0 symbol are binary for open or closed. 0 is Open (meaning off) and | is Closed (meaning on).

  • In some countries (the UK is one), the plug has a fuse. If the fuse is blown, that could explain why no current is flowing. The type of lead that computers use in the UK is known as a 'kettle lead' and you may well have another one around from an old computer. They're quite distinctive and are pretty much interchangeable. If you have another lead, try it to see whether that makes a difference. You should also try plugging another device into the socket just to make sure that a fuse hasn't tripped in the main fuse box and that the mains socket that the plug is plugged into is actually live. If you find that the socket isn't working, take a look at the main fuse box and set the tripped switch (if in doubt, contact your power supplier). If you find that the plug isn't working, replace the fuse (if you can - some plugs are sealed) with one of the same value, or just use another computer lead that you know is OK.
  • Different computers get switched on in different ways. Some have a power switch at the back (or side) of the case, some have a single button at the front, some have a switch at the back (or side) and a power button at the front, etc. A few (e.g. some Macs with Apple displays) can even be switched on via a power switch on the monitor. Note, however, that most computers can NOT be switched on by simply switching on the monitor, so do not assume if your monitor is switched on that your computer should magically be working.
  • If you've got a manual for your computer, it's a good idea to read it and get guidance from there. Manuals often include troubleshooting tips that could assist you further, with specific instructions for your particular machine.
  • Some computers do not function if it is expecting a different combination of drives, referring to the jumper settings and master/slave designations.

  • Make sure your power supply is set to the voltage in your country. For the USA, Canada, Japan, Mexico and some of the Americas, it should usually be set at 110V, 115V or 120V. Most of the rest of the world should be set at 240V. If you do not know what voltage you use, contact your electric company and ask them. Setting it at the wrong voltage may fry your PSU (and sometimes the computer).
